CLEVELAND TOWNSHIP — Lawrence Latsko remembers when eight soldiers died as a mortar struck a nearby barracks soon after he arrived in Vietnam. He vividly recalls a new friend, an 18-year-old kid who had arrived about a month earlier. He was just 10 feet away from Latsko while on patrol in the jungle when a Viet Cong sniper shot the younger soldier in the head. “He was a real good friend,” recalled Latsko, who was about 20 at the time and had a few more months experience.
