NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Noxubee County deputies continue to investigate a weekend shooting. The gunfire happened in the Cedar Creek community. A car was struck by a bullet, causing damage. JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY (WCBI) – A Columbus native is now leading Jackson State University. Dr. Denise Jones Gregory was appointed to serve as Interim President by the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. The move comes after Dr. Marcus Thompson submitted his resignation on Wednesday. It was effective immediately. This marks the third president in less than a decade to resign from their position as president of JSU.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus man has been accused of swindling unemployment money. Benjamin Coleman was arrested by special agents from the State Auditor’s office. He allegedly falsified weekly certification sheets to get unemployment funds from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. State Auditor Shad White said this arrest is part of Operation Payback. It investigates unemployment compensation fraud.

REFORM, AL. (WCBI) – A West Alabama man shot during an argument dies at a Columbus hospital. 30-year-old Deke Duke Simmons died at Baptist Golden Triangle early on the morning of May 7. Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Simmons was brought to the hospital after the Tuesday night shooting. Merchant told WCBI the shooting occurred at the victim’s home. WCBI has learned an arrest was made in the investigation. We are awaiting a return call from the Reform Police for confirmation.
