NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Noxubee County deputies continue to investigate a weekend shooting. The gunfire happened in the Cedar Creek community. A car was struck by a bullet, causing damage. Investigators say a home was also shot up. No injuries were reported. If you have any information, please call the Noxubee County Sheriff’s Office or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers. Columbus native appointed president Jackson State University

JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY (WCBI) – A Columbus native is now leading Jackson State University. Dr. Denise Jones Gregory was appointed to serve as Interim President by the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. The move comes after Dr. Marcus Thompson submitted his resignation on Wednesday. It was effective immediately. This marks the third president in less than a decade to resign from their position as president of JSU.
Man accused of unemployment conception fraud in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus man has been accused of swindling unemployment money. Benjamin Coleman was arrested by special agents from the State Auditor’s office. He allegedly falsified weekly certification sheets to get unemployment funds from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. State Auditor Shad White said this arrest is part of Operation Payback. It investigates unemployment compensation fraud.

West Alabama man dies after being shot during an argument

REFORM, AL. (WCBI) – A West Alabama man shot during an argument dies at a Columbus hospital. 30-year-old Deke Duke Simmons died at Baptist Golden Triangle early on the morning of May 7. Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Simmons was brought to the hospital after the Tuesday night shooting. Merchant told WCBI the shooting occurred at the victim’s home. WCBI has learned an arrest was made in the investigation. We are awaiting a return call from the Reform Police for confirmation.
Keesler Air Force Base goes on lockdown in Biloxi

BILOXI, Miss. (WCBI) – A Mississippi Gulf Coast Air Force Base went on lockdown this morning, on May 7. Our sister-station, WXXV, has reported that no active shooter or threats have been at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. 81st Training Wing officials released the statement late this morning. The base remains on a heightened state of alert. Keesler was put on lockdown around 8 am. This incident was not connected to the previously scheduled readiness exercise.

BROOKSVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mayor of Brooksville has taken an early exit from office and has resigned. Aldermen accepted Earlie Henley’s resignation on Tuesday night, May 6. You may recall that Henley recently lost re-election to former mayor David Boswell. Vice-Mayor Angel Anthony-Brooks will serve as mayor until July 1. Gun found in student's backpack at elementary school in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A gun was found inside a student’s backpack at a Starkville elementary school. The incident happened this morning at Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary. A student saw something on the school bus and reported it to administrators. Educators found the backpack and cleared the room before finding the gun. Staff and school resource officers followed district procedures. The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
Man faces several charges after a robbery in Sulligent

SULLIGENT, AL. (WCBI) – New information has been released on a Sulligent bank robbery. 24-year-old Rahmean Williams has been charged with Robbery 1st, Theft 1st, and Burglary 2nd degree. The Amory man remains in the Lamar County Jail. He was arrested a short time after last week’s hold-up. Williams has been accused of handing a teller at First National Bank a note. It read, “This was a robbery,” and demanded that the teller put $10,000 in a bag. The teller did provide the cash from her drawer.

In a Würth 400 that featured calamity at every corner, with a staggering 12 cautions making up 73 of what ended up at 271 laps following overtime, the 35-year-old Kiwi methodically moved forward and stayed out of trouble. After starting 37th in the #88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet Camaro, van Gisbergen never fell off the lead lap throughout the contest and ended up 35th and 30th in Stage 1 and 2, respectively. There was one close call, though.
