BAY CITY, MI – More than $10,000 has been raised for the family of a 14-year-old Handy Middle School student who died suddenly Tuesday, April 15. The eighth-grade student, whose name has not been released by authorities, died shortly after exiting his school bus near MacGregor Elementary. A GoFundMe created Thursday sought $5,000 to assist the teen’s family in covering funeral expenses. About 24 hours later, $10,800 had been amassed over more than 260 donations.

Bay City Manager Dana Muscott was spot on in a recent press release. She noted the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown “positions Bay City to be a destination that’s attractive to residents, entrepreneurs and visitors.” But that doesn’t mean difficult questions looming in the wake of the 20-year operation’s abrupt foreclosure and subsequent change of ownership don’t deserve answering.

BAY CITY, MI – A Handy Middle School student died Tuesday, April 15, shortly after getting off his school bus during end-of-day dismissal, according to district officials. Bay City Public Schools Interim Superintendent Rick Seebeck wrote in a statement late Tuesday that very few details are known about what happened. The school bus the student exited was near MacGregor Elementary at the time of the incident, and the student was on a sidewalk, according to the statement.
