PHILADELPHIA - A massive verdict against the makers of the weedkiller Roundup wasn't excessive, a Pennsylvania appeals court has ruled. On May 8, a three-judge panel of the Superior Court affirmed a $177.3 million award from the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. The 2023 verdict was in the middle of a trio of wins for plaintiffs, with the others valued at $3.5 million and $2.2 billion (it was later reduced to $404 million).

PHILADELPHIA - A federal judge has approved another class action settlement over privacy concerns at The Philadelphia Inquirer. Philadelphia judge John Younge on May 6 granted final approval of the settlement in a lawsuit that claimed the Inquirer violated the Video Privacy Protection Act when sending viewing information to Facebook. The Inquirer is just one company that faced litigation over the Facebook Pixel, which lets Meta receive viewing information.

PHILADELPHIA - A federal court has found no racial animus in Upper Merion's decision to take for itself land being sold to a Black business owner under a gentlemen's agreement. Judge Mark Kearney on May 1 ruled against Eddie Hendrick in his federal lawsuit over the taking of a property adjacent to Walker Park that Upper Merion had long been interested in turning into a recreational area for residents. But its owner, Louis Damiani, didn't want to sell it to the township.

PHILADELPHIA - Detained for months on end, convicts who allegedly violated the terms of their probation have a second chance to prove an unfair system in Allegheny County rubber-stamps their fate. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit on May 6 partly ruled for a group of probationers hoping to lead a class action lawsuit against the county's criminal court system and two judges they say keep them in jail before a final decision is reached at a clip much higher than other judges.
