MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Beloved Montgomery resident and Congressional Gold Medal recipient Romay Davis has died, a close family friend confirmed to WSFA 12 News. She died peacefully at her Montgomery home on Friday. She was 104. Born in Virginia on Oct. 29, 1919, Catherine Romay Johnson was the middle child of six children and her parents’ only daughter. She turned 10 the day the stock market crashed, an event that plunged the nation into the years-long Great Depression.

One of the victims has been identified as George Elijah Jr.His son, Mitchell “Holt” Elijah, said his father was at the Tienda Los Hermanos grocery store Tuesday evening visiting with the store owner while picking some food for his dogs when shots rang out. “He taught me everything,” Holt Elijah said.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - He was a good man who would do anything he could for those around him, became friends quickly, and raised his son and stepson to be respectful of others. That’s how Mitchell “Holt” Elijah, described his father, George Elijah Jr.Holt was in Auburn Tuesday night, preparing for bed when he got the frantic call from his uncle. “He called and says, “Hey, something’s happened. Your dad said he’s been shot and thinks he’s dying,”” Holt explained.
