New York state probing whether ash, charcoal on Long Island South Shore beaches came from New Jersey wildfires

New York state investigators are trying to determine if charcoal and ash washing up this past week on South Shore ocean beaches, including surf zones at both Jones Beach and Robert Moses, are related to the recent wildfires in New Jersey. The state Department of Environmental Conservation said the incidents were first reported by the Long Island office of New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on May 6.

The Memorial Day weekend is still two weeks off, but AAA is already warning of roads and airports packed with holiday travelers. AAA said it expects more than 45 million Americans to be traveling domestically for the holiday weekend, which it defines as Thursday, May 22, through Monday, May 26. Those travelers will travel at least 50 miles from home, AAA said in a statement Monday.
Hit-and-run driver strikes, injures boy, 14, near school in Wyandanch

Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck and injured a 14-year-old boy near a middle school in Wyandanch on Friday. Suffolk County Police said the teen was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of minor injuries. The condition of the teen — and the extent of any injuries — was not immediately known. The hit-and-run took place near the intersection of 35th Street and Garden City Avenue around 8:30 a.m., police said. The site is near the Milton L.

An early morning fire Thursday at a senior housing development in Rockville Centre left three residents injured, one seriously, fire officials said. Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro said the fire at the Halandia Court apartments on North Centre Avenue was reported at 7:12 a.m. and brought 80 firefighters from Rockville Centre, Malverne, Lakeview and Lynbrook to the scene. Firefighters found trapped occupants in a first-floor apartment.

Power outage causes major delays on LIRR

A power outage in the East River tunnels has thrown Wednesday's morning rush-hour into mayhem on the Long Island Rail Road, causing delayed and canceled trains and with trains being diverted from Penn Station to Grand Central Terminal. Police are investigating a shooting incident Tuesday in Selden. Suffolk County police said a man, whose identity has not been released, was shot inside an apartment on College Road.
