Rievaulx Abbey, nestled in a secluded valley near woodland, offers a serene and scenic setting for a short walk (Image: Jonathan Smith) The setting of Rievaulx Abbey makes this my favourite of all. Bolton, Whitby, and Fountains all stand proud in open space while Rievaulx is more hidden away near woodland and on the valley floor. It is a special location. This is a short walk with Rievaulx Abbey as its focus, usually in view.

The moors above the village of Ilkley offer some of the best-known and familiar walks in Ilkley. The rocks at the Cow and Calf and the wide, airy moors above them have some excellent and interesting walks. Here, in my opinion, is the best. The Cow and Calf, half a mile from Ilkley town centre, make for the best start. Step out of the car and you are immediately into some unique and stunning scenery. A short walk takes you in amongst the rocks.

However, the walk also explores the little hamlet that grew up around the abbey and includes a pleasant stroll in the woods.

3 1/1 A walk over the rolling countryside of the Hambleton Hills near Castle Howard. Included in the walk is the lovely woodland of the less attractively named Cum Hag Woods. It is a peaceful walk, reminiscent in my mind of the books of Jane Austen. Terrington lies on the southern fringes of the rolling Hambleton Hills. Today it is a quiet country village of stone houses, but it has a history going back to before the Norman Conquest in 1066.
