Through all the weeks of warmups, one special crew on the track makes sure both animal and rider stay safe in the cold, the rain or sunshine. WAVE News spent a morning with a Churchill Downs outrider; a veteran who still loves the job and the tradition of the big race. It’s early morning and freezing. That doesn’t matter, though. Jockeys need to practice, so Lee Lockwood and the Churchill Downs outriders are booted up and layered up, too.
