Last week’s mega deal of Google acquiring CNAPP provider Wiz for $32B has some lamenting the future of IPOs in the cybersecurity space. Wiz was on a high growth trajectory and given Wiz had previously rebuffed Google’s interest in summer of 2024, many assumed Wiz was on target for a 2025 IPO, the success of which was meant to serve as a bellwether for the overall health of cybersecurity market. Last week, I spoke at the C2 conference in London. The C2 conference is an invite-only threat intelligence conference run by the team at SE Labs. The core themes of the event were timely and provoked interesting discussion: artificial intelligence, supply chain security, and cyber hygiene. All three of these dominated the conversations surprisingly equally and were – unsurprisingly – very interlinked. Below are a few thoughts on each coming out of the conference.

I recently attended my first-ever Insider Summit (formerly the Insider Threat Summit) in Monterey, CA. The event, in its ninth year, was attended by insider risk leaders, counterintelligence professionals, and current/former members of law enforcement and the US military. The heavy focus on people – not data or systems – was surprising to me. More specifically, there was an emphasis on addressing “the whole person” and focusing on employee wellness.

A variant of the Mirai DDoS botnet that arrived in late 2016 and has remained active (because its creators released the malware for anyone to use), is using unpatched (and in this case unpatchable) AVTECH closed-circuit television cameras as part of its botnet to attack targets-of-opportunity, such as an early target of the French hosting firm OVH, security researcher Brian Krebs, or targets within the financial sector.
