    JOPLIN, Mo. — Some Missouri Southern students received an early Christmas present this morning. The Missouri Southern State University’s 83rd commencement ceremony was held today. After honors and recognition from school president, Dr. Dean VanGalen, and commencement speaker, MSSU Dr. Clay Routledge, 240 graduate students walked the stage and were handed their diplomas as families and friends cheered. MSSU has three commencement ceremonies each year.

    CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Folks in Carl Junction didn’t let the cold stop them from enjoying their annual Christmas parade. The parade made its way down Main Street, beginning near the elementary schools and ending at the Carl Junction Community Center. CJ police led the parade, with the high school marching band, ROTC cadets, and multiple local car clubs following behind to entertain the crowd. Candy—and even books—were passed out to the kids along the route.

    GRANBY, Mo. — For some, New Year’s is celebrated at the end of the year. However, one local Hmong community started the celebration on Saturday. The 20th annual Hmong New Year’s celebration kicked off at the Granby Intermediate School. The Hmong New Year holiday starts at the end of the harvest season. Hundreds of Hmong-Americans came out to celebrate in traditional and modern Hmong clothes. The event had dance performances and fashion shows showing off generations of the Hmong style.

    CARTHAGE, Mo. — A local hospital turned on the Christmas spirit this evening. Mercy Hospital Carthage held its 6th annual Cookies with Santa event. After the big guy was brought in by an EMS escort, kids lined up to get their pictures taken with him and Mrs. Claus. They also received a bag of goodies. Other featured guests included the Grinch, Frozen characters, and the Elf on the Shelf. The health system also provided free food and refreshments, and train rides out in the parking lot.

    JOPLIN, Mo. — There was Christmas fun for the whole family today at Missouri Southern. The university hosted its annual Holiday Happenings event. There was a makeshift ice skating rink outside in the alumni parking lot, while inside, a whole lot of shopping options and activities. It gives members of the community, and particularly students who are far from home, the chance to purchase locally handmade gifts. Later, Santa and a few of his reindeer also made an appearance.
