LINCOLN — Gov. Jim Pillen appointed retired Omaha judge J. Michael Coffey to the Liquor Control Commission. Those commissioners also serve on the new Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission. Coffey joins those commissions at a busy time: The Liquor Control Commission suspended its director due to an investigation of alleged criminal conduct, and the Medical Cannabis Commission has until July 1 to establish regulations for businesses that want to apply to be providers.

The runner-up in 2022's race for the west Omaha's District 4 seat in the Nebraska Legislature announced she will run again in 2026. Cindy Maxwell-Ostdiek, 57, said the 2025 session was frustrating because lawmakers spent more time "gutting ballot initiatives that voters overwhelmingly supported" than on addressing property taxes and health care access.

Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers sued the online shopping giant Temu, accusing the company of improperly mining user data, falsely advertising products and violating consumer protection laws. "Our office will hold Temu accountable for its exploitation of Nebraska consumers, brands and creators and fight hard for honesty and safety in the online marketplace," Hilgers stated in a Thursday press release.
