An Omaha senator's bill to divert youths at risk of getting in trouble with the law received first-round approval Thursday in a non-controversial vote that disguised the circuitous route the bill took to advance. State Sen. Terrell McKinney of Omaha prioritized LB48 to start a five-year pilot for Family Resource and Juvenile Assessment Centers that support youth and families involved in or at risk of entering the juvenile justice system.

LINCOLN — Omaha and Lincoln voters may get the option to move their local elections to coincide with the presidential race through a sweeping election bill that recently advanced in the Nebraska Legislature. Will Gillen is perky in the morning. When he's alert, he likes to play with his toys and watch "Baby Einstein" videos. Books like "Goodnight Moon" and some featuring Dora the Explorer are his favorites. He eats and drinks ravenously, and he runs fast. He likes to ride in his family's truck, and his parents will take him to get ice cream and go to the park where they look at water and wildlife. But most of the time, he sleeps.

With a successful ballot initiative behind them and an uphill battle in the Legislature ahead, the Gillens and other Nebraska advocates for medical cannabis are making what they hope is a last push in their more-than-a-decade fight to access the treatment

The Gillen family from Bellevue has pushed for years for access to medical cannabis for their son's seizures. They continue to advocate for adoption of a bill that would set a framework for treatment in Nebraska. More from @jdauzreyes: https://t.co/quLfvmd05L https://t.co/wgQLgm16XX
