Williamsport, Pa. — A former high school principal acquitted of sexual assault charges last week will not immediately return to his job, pending a review by the school district. Roger Freed was found not guilty of 26 charges stemming from a relationship with a former student. The four-day trial concluded late Thursday when the jury returned a verdict clearing the former administrator of all charges. Freed was not fired during the years-long investigation, but instead was suspended with pay.

Coudersport, Pa. — A state representative is speaking out after a local health system says its standing firm in its decision to stop labor and delivery services in a deeply-rural region. Rep. Martin Causer, who represents Potter County, says the decision by UPMC to discontinue those services at UPMC Cole in Coudersport is devastating and creates a “desert” of maternity care in the area. UPMC says a lack of medical professionals willing to work at the Potter County hospital is behind the decision.

Roulette Twp., Pa. — Police have closed an investigation into the death of a 55-year-old man in Potter County. PSP Coudersport responded to a report of a death at 28 North Street in Roulette Township between the evening of Jan. 7 and the morning of Jan. 8. Investigators determined that the man, Mark Kern, 55, of Roulette, died of natural causes. An earlier report stating the body was found at the Potter County Human Services building was incorrect.

Bellefonte, Pa. — A Kansas man allegedly bilked a towing company, then fled from police in a high-speed chase. Now state police have issued an arrest warrant for 50-year-old Maurice Mona Johnson for the theft and chase that happened on Jan. 1 in Centre County. Trooper Gregory Kurtz was dispatched after employees of S & R Repairs and Towing, 125 Sams Road, Bellefonte, called to say a man had left the business without paying his $690 towing fee.
