It’s being transported across the nation and making the deadliest drug threat the United States has ever seen, even deadlier. The drug is Xylazine. It’s a powerful animal tranquilizer that is now helping to fuel overdose deaths that have reached record setting levels.

CADILLAC -- Michigan inland fishing guides are beginning to to see changes. Starting March 1, 2024, all guides will need to meet new requirements to obtain a guide license through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. All applicants will be required to pass background checks as well as a few other requirements. One of the bigger changes that will be starting April 1, 2024. All licensed inland sport fishing guides must file an electronic report of their monthly catch activity.

CADILLAC — As Michigan’s weather has been all over the place in the last 24 hours, one local ski hill is looking to capitalize. Caberfae Peaks was closed Wednesday to take advantage of the frigid temperatures. The ski hill plans to make as much snow as they possibly can Wednesday through Thursday afternoon to try and build up their base snow. They are working with a base up to 30 inches still, and they hope to add another six to eight inches in the next 24 hours.
Two men dead after mobile home catches fire in Big Rapids

BIG RAPIDS — The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly mobile home fire that happened in Big Rapids Wednesday. Multiple fire departments responded to a fire at a mobile home park located at Circle Drive on 185th Avenue around 9 a.m.According to officials, two people were found dead inside of the trailer in different rooms. The names of the two men who have died have not yet been released.

CADILLAC — We’re giving you an early reminder to start signing up for the 12th Annual Crappie Attitude about Cancer Fishing Tournament that is held in Cadillac. The tournament will be held on May 18. Fishing will start at 6 a.m., and you must have your fish weight in by 2 p.m.Registration and weigh in will be located at Kenwood Park off Lake Cadillac, and only crappie will be weighed. All of the money made from registration and shirt sales will be going to Relay for Life.

CADILLAC — A well-known restaurant, owned by the same family for more than half a century is shutting down. Cadillac’s family restaurant Kountry Kitchen announced that their last day will be March 3. The restaurant has been owned and operated by the same family for three generations but one of the owners, Kathleen Jones, said it’s time to let it go. Kathleen Jones co-owns the restaurant with her son Jason. She said the restaurant has been in her family since the 70s when her parents bought it.
More movement on proposed Gotion EV plant happening in Green Charter Township

GREEN CHARTER TOWNSHIP — Things are now being done to clear the way for a new electric vehicle battery plant in Mecosta County. Chinese-owned battery maker Gotion said they are in the process of cutting trees for the $2.4 billion factory that’s expected to come to Green Charter Township. The plant could possibly bring more than 2,300 jobs to the area. Some people have been opposed to the plant over environmental concerns and because of its alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
