CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 22News I-Team report examining cameras inside Springfield Public Schools has earned a regional Edward R. Murrow Award. The I-Team examined the agreement that gave the Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit live access to school cameras in the event of an emergency. When the time came to renew the agreement between the police and the school, at least one School Committee member expressed privacy concerns.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Latino Economic Development Corporation is helping to empower a number of women-owned businesses in western Massachusetts. Members gathered in Springfield on Thursday to award more than $1,500 in grant funding. The announcement was made at the new home of ‘Visual Sound Productions’ on Union Street. The production company is one of today’s grant recipients. Owner Nicole Nell told 22News this grant made it possible for her to expand her business and hire more employees.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The state’s highest court has reinstated a first-degree murder conviction in a 2018 Springfield shooting. Luis Gomez was sentenced to life in prison for the deadly shooting of Jesus Flores at a nightclub on Waltham Avenue in Springfield. After he was convicted, the trial judge reduced the verdict to second-degree murder based on a lack of evidence of premeditation.

Mayor Domenic Sarno was joined by developers on Monday to announce plans for the South Main Street project. The plan involves the re-development of three prominent buildings near MGM Springfield that will include up to 30 housing units and ground-floor retail space. The Willow Street Central Garage will also have 350 parking spots to accommodate residents and visitors.

BOSTON (WWLP) – A motion hearing was being held in the Karen Read case on Tuesday. Read was charged with murder in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, in January of 2022. O’Keefe was found outside the Canton home of Brian Albert, another Boston police officer. Prosecutors argued that Read hit him with her SUV and left him for dead in a snowstorm, while the defense claimed she was framed in a wide-ranging coverup.

Eastern Mass murder case solved after 30 years

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WWLP) – An arrest has been made in a more than three-decade-old murder-for-hire case in eastern Massachusetts. The Middlesex District Attorney said Edward Watson has been arrested for the 1992 murder of Michelle Miller. According to the District Attorney’s office, Miller was the victim of a murder-for-hire plot and Watson killed her in a Cambridge basement at the request of her abusive boyfriend, Daniel Innis.
