Rev. Michael Racine is leaving St. Lawrence Martyr Church in New Bedford to become pastor of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Assonet and St. John Neumann Church in East Freetown. Racine oversaw renovations at St. Lawrence Martyr and helped unite the Whaling City Catholic Community collaborative. The St. Lawrence Martyr Church continues to undergo an extensive interior restoration, and the Rev. Michael Racine will miss being on hand to see the project through to completion.

Kendra Santiago, a Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech graduate, is the first from her school to be accepted into Harvard University. Inspired by the George Floyd case, Santiago plans to pursue a career as a criminal defense lawyer, advocating for marginalized communities. In addition to her academic achievements, Santiago excelled in athletics and extracurricular activities, including varsity soccer and track.

The fishing vessel Eileen Rita, which capsized and sank in Boston Harbor in April, has been returned to its home port of New Bedford. The damaged vessel is currently at a private company's facility in the northern harbor. The future of the Eileen Rita, whether it will be repaired or scrapped, remains uncertain. The Coast Guard rescued the three crew members after the vessel ran aground and began taking on water.

Freetown Lakeville Middle School principal Jackie Francisco will run 31 miles on Memorial Day to honor fallen Navy SEAL Tyler Trahan. Trahan, a Freetown native, was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2009. Francisco's run will begin at Trahan's gravesite and end at a memorial rotary dedicated to him in Freetown.
