    NORTH SHORE — Erin Aili, the 2021 champion from Ray, Minnesota, took the lead Monday in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. Aili was the first musher to leave the Trail Center checkpoint Monday. She was traveling near the Gunflint Trail toward the Kings Road Turnaround as of 12:15 p.m. Kirk Weber, of Stewartville, Minnesota, maintained a wide lead during the marathon but has since scratched. Erin Altemus, of Grand Marais, is in second place.

    NORTH SHORE — A musher from Stewartville, Minnesota, maintained a wide lead in the 40th running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon at 8 a.m. Monday. However, his GPS tracker shows he was off-route and likely dropped out of the race. Kirk Weber, competing in his first Beargrease, was stopped in Grand Marais after logging 186.4 miles. His next checkpoint was Mineral Center.

    DULUTH — Forty-one employees at Duluth Public Schools were notified they will be displaced, the district confirmed Tuesday. That includes one principal, 20 teachers, 16 paraprofessionals and four other non-certified staff. Employees were notified last week and the district also sent them letters Friday. The district is reducing 8% of its staff as part of $5 million in budget reductions for 2025-26. An additional $2.6 million was cut for the current school year.

    A six-month pilot program last year demonstrated that Duluth Public Schools students and staff will use free public transit. DTA Pass will return Monday after the school district secured one-time funding through June 30, 2026. All district staff and high school students at Denfeld, East and the Alternative Learning Center can use Duluth Transit Authority buses for free with a school ID during the week and on weekends. Free rides will be available during the summer as well.
