Gladstone softball’s Tia Schone signs with Grand Rapids Community College

GLADSTONE, Mich. (WLUC) - Gladstone senior Tia Schone signed her letter of intent to play softball at Grand Rapids Community College Tuesday. Schone will join the Raiders as a pitcher and utility player next spring. Schone said she is grateful for the opportunity to the play at the next level, while also staying in Michigan. “I’m really excited for this opportunity, as it’s something that not everybody gets to experience,” Shone said.
Bucky Johnson retires after 25 years as Iron Mountain head coach

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Harvey “Bucky” Johnson is stepping down as the head coach of Iron Mountain boys’ basketball, effective immediately. After taking over the program in 2000, Johnson amassed a 392-170 overall record and made two trips to the state title game in 2019 and 2021. His teams also won 17 conference championships during his tenure. He not only coached basketball but also spent the last 30 years coaching football and golf.

The Northern Michigan Wildcats find themselves in a similar position to last year at this time: winless. Neither side sees any need for extra motivation this week. “It means a lot. Westwood Patriots building trust ahead of 2024 season

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC)—Westwood is set to open its 2024 season in less than two weeks, and things for the Patriots will be a little different this season as a new head coach takes over. Tyler Thomas, a 2014 graduate of Negaunee High School and St. Norbert Green Knight Alumni, will lead the Patriots this season. Thomas was most recently the head football coach at Ontonagon High School but moved to Westwood to be closer to home.

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - Football is in the air at Miners Stadium. Negaunee began preseason practice Monday. The Miners will look to claim another conference title in 2024. They also want to make it back to Ford Field, where their season ended with a state runner-up finish two years ago. They’ll have to do so without some key players from 2023, like Kai Lacar, James Thomson and Evan Gauthier, who all graduated last spring.

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The Norway Knights advanced to the Division 4 State Championship after a 3-2 win over the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals. The Knights next opponent the Beal City Aggies in the Division 4 State Championship. The Aggies opened the scoring in the first inning as Jack Fussman singled on a line drive to center field scoring Cuyler Smith giving Beal City the 1-0 lead.
Michigan Tech names new head women’s soccer coach

Houghton, Mich. (WLUC)—Michigan Tech women’s soccer will have a new head coach for the 2024-2025 season. Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Suzanne Sanregret named Melissa Kuhar as the third soccer head coach in the program’s history Monday. “I am pleased to welcome Melissa to Michigan Tech,” Sanregret said. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as an assistant for seven years at the collegiate level.
