Franklin City Commission hears ordinances and approves bids

The Franklin City Commission heard first reading of two ordinances and approved bids for two projects on March 25. First reading was heard of an ordinance amending the erosion control and natural drainage ordinance. The amendment was described as a minor change related to a requirement from the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection.
Franklin City Commission receives draft of comprehensive plan

A draft of the Franklin — Simpson County Community Comprehensive Plan was presented to the Franklin City Commission at their March 25 meeting. No action was taken on the plan during the special called meeting at the Ag Building at Community Park. The draft of the plan can be seen on the City of Franklin’s website, www.franklinky.org. Ed Holmes and Ryan Holmes of EHI Consultants presented the draft of the plan.

Interim Franklin-Simpson Industrial Authority Board Director Jim Decesare spoke to Simpson Fiscal Court during fiscal court’s March 19 meeting. Decesere was hired on a part time, 20-hour per week basis on March 7. Former Industrial Authority Board Director Dennis Griffin resigned in late February after serving as executive director for 25 years. He attended his first industrial authority board meeting on March 13. Decesere mentioned some of the initiatives he is going to focus on.
Play to help raise funds for recreation area

A Franklin author, who has written 14 books, is producing a play based on one of her books to help raise funds for a project in the Harristown Recreation Park in Franklin. The play “Let Me Come Home” will be performed on Saturday, April 6 at the Goodnight Auditorium on South Main Street beginning at 5 p.m.Sarah Tuck wrote the book and the play that both have the same title.
School board approves 2024-25 school year calendar

Classes for the 2024 — 2025 school year in the Simpson County School System will begin on August 14, 2024 and end on May 22, 2025. The Simpson County Board of Education gave final approval to the ’24 — ’25 school year calendar at the regular monthly meeting on March 21. There are 170 instructional days on the calendar, which is required by the state. Among the lengthy class breaks in the calendar are Fall Break, Oct. 7 -11; Thanksgiving Break, Nov. 27 — 29; Christmas Break, Dec. 23, 2024 — Jan.
Industrial Authority Board takes no action on land purchase

No action was taken at the March 13 Franklin-Simpson Industrial Authority Board of Directors meeting regarding the proposed purchase of land near the Henderson Industrial Park. About 40 people attended the meeting held at the Industrial Authority office. Residents of the area of the industrial park have expressed opposition to the proposed land purchase.
City commission pays tribute to Moody and Barnett

The Franklin City Commission paid tribute March 11 to two well-known Franklin men who recently died. Mayor Larry Dixon said that on behalf of the city commission and himself a proclamation honoring the late Tom Moody was presented during a ceremony for Moody held on March 10. “He has been a great ambassador to our community. It was a great crowd there. He was well thought of. It was a grand gathering in honor of Tom Moody,” Dixon said.
Everclear and Sister Hazel to headline Summer Vibes Music Festival

The rock bands Everclear and Sister Hazel headline the 2024 Summer Vibes Music Festival scheduled for Aug. 24 in downtown Franklin. There will be no charge to attend. Last year’s event, headlined by Smash Mouth, at one point drew an estimated 5,000 people. Everclear was formed in 1991 in Portland, Oregon. Sister Hazel is from Gainesville, Florida. Among Everclear’s songs are Santa Monica, Father of Mine, Everything to Everyone, I Will Buy You a New Life, and Heartspark Dollarsign.
Fiscal court approves budget amendment and board reappointments

Simpson Fiscal Court approved a budget amendment ordinance and four board reappointments at their March 5 meeting. The budget amendment was approved on a second and final reading vote. The ordinance adds $238,264 in unanticipated revenue and appropriations to the county’s budget. All of the additional revenue and appropriations are in the general fund. The board reappointments included Cory Konow to a four-year term on the Simpson County Water District Board of Directors.
Former F-S principal, coach inducted into Butler County Schools Hall of Fame

A former principal and boys head basketball coach at Franklin-Simpson High School, is part of the inaugural class of the Butler County Schools Hall of Fame. Frank Cardwell is among 10 individuals in the first class of the Butler County Schools Hall of Fame. The 10 individuals were recognized during ceremonies at Butler County High School in Morgantown Feb. 2 and 3. “It was a great honor,” Cardwell said about being inducted into the Butler County Schools Hall of Fame.
