Ray Gronberg: Thank you, Kelly. Kelly Kenoyer: So tell me a little bit about House Bill 765: I hear it's dead. So how did it die? Ray: House Bill 765 is dead in that name, it is now -several of its ideas are now incorporated in Senate Bill 205, which is on the move in the North Carolina House.

Alpek Polyester in Fayetteville will cease its operations in North Carolina on July 31, according to a press release. A notice about the layoffs said 180 jobs will be lost because of these closures. Alpek took over the site in 2001 and used it to manufacture PET resin. 1,4-Dioxane is a byproduct of the production of PET. It’s a federally unregulated solvent that the EPA considers a likely carcinogen, and Alpek discharges a whole lot of it into the Cape Fear River.

For tourists, coastal North Carolina is a paradise. And it can feel that way for tiny little Eastern Mud Snails, too. For them, though, it’s perhaps a different part of the coast: instead of white sandy beaches, these tiny gastropods love the brackish water and muck in the estuaries. “They are little omnivorous detritivores. They will eat anything that can fit in their little mouths," says Dr. Byron Toothman, a coastal reserve researcher in the Cape Fear Region.

The Wilmington City Council has passed its initial reading for the 2025 budget — it’ll require some modifications before the second reading to include changes council members have asked for. As with earlier proposals, the budget includes significant investments in staff, including $8.6 million for recruiting and retaining skilled employees.
