Social media isn’t innately bad for children — but monitoring is essential. Smartphones are ubiquitous among young people. In the United States, 95 percent of teens ages 13 to 17 have access to a smartphone — a device that usually contains social media. A third of this teenage group has a social media account, and nearly 40 percent of children ages 8 to 12 use social media. While there’s no magical age for giving a child a smartphone, parents or guardians should consider various factors.

Sweaty crowds of West Campus kids, hip-hop heads, hippy dippy Austinites and townies filled a tiny dive bar on Monday nights for 21 years to listen to DJ sets. The bar was smoky, bras were on the ceiling and hip-hop played. "This was a place where it didn't matter who you were or where you're from. That's where you went on Mondays," said DJ Mel, one of the DJs who performed on Monday nights at Nasty's. The DJ is bringing a night at Nasty's back this Saturday with a tribute party. "Bring a towel.
