JACKSON−A crash on Route 571 Thursday afternoon claimed the lives of an Ocean County husband and wife, authorities said. The collision happened shortly before 4 p.m. near 1192 Toms River Road, which Route 571 is also known as. According to a preliminary investigation, a 67-year-old man who was at the wheel of a Chevrolet, and his 61-year-old wife, both from the Toms River area, were headed northwest on Route 571, Jackson Police Chief Matthew D. Kunz said.

An 80-year-old Barnegat woman died in a crash on the Atlantic City Expressway in Pleasantville Thursday, police said. The crash happened shortly before noon in the eastbound lanes of the expressway near milepost 4.8, the New Jersey State Police said. Police said a preliminary investigation found the Hyundai subcompact SUV driven by the Barnegat woman was stopped in the left lane and was rear-ended by another vehicle. A Genesis GV80 SUV collided with the back of the stopped Hyundai, police said.

LONG BRANCH − Authorities are investigating a stabbing that occurred on Broadway Thursday afternoon. There was no word on the condition of the victim or whether there have been any arrests. ASBURY PARK − Water quality tests showed elevated levels of bacteria in Deal Lake, but samples taken from the Atlantic Ocean beaches were normal, officials said. The Tuesday tests by the state Department of Environmental Protection followed a discharge of some 67,500 gallons of stormwater and sewage that spilled into Deal Lake from from line breaks in Asbury Park, officials said. The discharge was discovered Saturday morning during a Deal Lake Commission cleanup.

ASBURY PARK−The state Department of Environmental Protection has estimated that some 67,500 gallons of storm water and sewage leaked into Deal Lake from a broken pipe in Asbury Park - enough to fill a 5-story water tank. On Tuesday, the DEP tested the water in various parts of the lake and the ocean around the outflow pipe. Results are expected Wednesday. Details on how they came up with the estimated gallons from the leak were not released.
