Mr Donnelly was always predicted to face a fight in the Wicklow constituency after boundary changes saw it reduced from five to four seats. He lost his seat in Wicklow's 13th and final count, announced before dawn on Monday morning. Donnelly was the only candidate on the party ticket in Wicklow despite many local supporters wanting a running mate. Micheál Martin went canvassing with him on the final day of campaigning, ensuring he got big media coverage.

Not since George Lee stepped out of the RTÉ Newsroom and into Leinster House has there been such a buzz about a media candidate. But Gráinne Seoige’s foray into politics is going to be even short than Lee’s ill-fated time in Fine Gael. Lee topped the poll in a by-election in 2009 but lasted only nine months before returning to Montrose. Seoige won’t even get to see the inside of the Dáil, having attracted around 5pc of the vote in Galway West.
