After missing three games and part of another for the birth of his third child – another boy – two-time All-Star outfielder Bryan Reynolds returned from paternity leave to rejoin the Pittsburgh Pirates. Reynolds will start in right field and bat third in the order against the Texas Rangers on Saturday at PNC Park. He is batting .222/.295/.360 and leads the Pirates with 39 RBIs and is tied for second with 10 doubles and eight home runs.

Josh Smith led off with a bloop single and scored when Sam Haggerty’s sharp grounder to center field skipped under the glove of Oneil Cruz for an error, and Mike Burrows followed by throwing a wild pitch.

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed reliever Dennis Santana was suspended four games by MLB for taking a swipe at a fan from the bullpen Thursday night during the second game of a doubleheader at Detroit. The suspension was scheduled to start Friday, when the Pirates play host to the Texas Rangers for the first game of a three-game series at PNC Park. MLB.com reported that Santana will appeal the suspension, which won’t be enforced until after a hearing.

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher/first baseman Endy Rodriguez has been shut down from throwing for four weeks after visiting Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the orthopedic surgeon who performed Tommy John surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in December 2023. Rodriguez had his rehabilitation transition to Pirate City in Bradenton, Fla., but is expected to be out at least eight weeks before he can play baseball again.
