AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Potter County Commissioners moved ahead today with plans to replace the former district courts building with parking by early April. They voted to approve plans to spend up to just more than $3 million for the demolition that Senior Project Manager Mike Head said should take 10 months. The start day for the project is June 9. The new parking lot will serve the new district courts building and the historic courthouse downtown on South Fillmore near E. 5th Avenue.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The U.S. Justice Department asked an Amarillo judge today to dismiss what remains of a lawsuit challenging the use of a drug for abortions. The U.S. Supreme Court left mifepristone’s FDA approval intact in 2022. The Supreme Court found those who filed the lawsuit did not have the right to sue. Amarillo Judge Mattew Kacsmaryk had earlier found a ban justified. The states of Missouri, Idaho and Kansas tried to keep the lawsuit alive after the Supreme Court ruling.

POTTER COUNTY, Texas (KFDA) - The case of a man who died in the Potter County Detention Center may end in a settlement. The County and the father and mother of Larry Douglas Jr. told a federal judge yesterday they want to pause their case because of a possible settlement. The judge had previously told them to be ready for trial by September 22. The parents said in their lawsuit Douglas suffered for days with what appeared to be a burst appendix about two years ago.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - A federal judge ruled today that the lawsuits against Amarillo ISD over the deaths of two students in two incidents will move forward. The judge denied AISD’s motions to dismiss that argued there was no intentionally discriminatory actions that led to the deaths of the children. Emerson Cole died three months before her 11th birthday after an allergic reaction at school on January 17, 2023.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Candidates and special interest groups have spent almost a million dollars in April on the upcoming city council election. According to spending reports filed Friday, Political Action Committees did about half that spending, largely on advertising for the candidates they support. To view the reports, click here. The PACs are fueled by large donations but none larger than Alex Fairly’s DealOn. It gave $230,000 to Save Amarillo supporting Mayor Cole Stanley and his allies.
