BEAK Week fundraiser to support literacy efforts at Lawton Public Library

Eisenhower High School students want their fund-raising skills to benefit literacy efforts in the community. Eisenhower High used the proceeds from its BEAK Week project in early March to donate $10,000 to Lawton Public Library, a donation acknowledged by the City Council earlier this month.

Proposed plans for the old Hoffman’s Pub and Grill in downtown Lawton are similar enough to the areas’s defined zoning uses that they can continue, members of the City Planning Commission said last week. FISTA awards construction contracst for anechoic chambers

FISTA Innovation Park’s governing board has selected contractors to install two anechoic chambers and a building that will house them. Members of the FISTA Development Trust Authority voted unanimously Friday to award ETS-Lindgren a $4.246 million contract for the anechoic chambers, and to hire QUAD Construction to handle construction of the steel pre-fab building that will house those chambers. QUAD has worked on other projects for FISTA, including construction of the original FISTA 1 complex.

Council votes to allow old school to become new homeless shelter

City Council members have signed off on a plan that will convert an old school in south Lawton into housing for homeless families. Quest of Oklahoma, doing business as MIGHT Community Development and Resource Center, has plans in hand and funding in place to remodel 19,600 square feet of the one-time Roosevelt Elementary School into living quarters for up to 10 homeless families, along with office space for services to help those families move into their own homes.

City of Lawton preparing to start Ellsworth spillway project

Almost a decade after massive, flooding rains caused significant damage, the spillway on the Lake Ellsworth dam will be getting its repairs. City Council members approved without discussion Tuesday a $46.41 million contract with McMillen Inc., Boise, Idaho, for repairs centered on and around the spillway that is on the “down lake” side of the dam on the southwest corner of the lake.

City Council members are ready to launch two major construction projects today: selecting a contractor to handle repairs on the Lake Ellsworth dam spillway, and soliciting bids so they can take the same action on a plan to rebuild bridges on South 11th Street. The council will be acting on a recommendation from city staff to award a $46.410 million repair project to McMillen Inc., Boise, Idaho, for the Ellsworth spillway rehabilitation work.
City Council to weigh plans that will benefit the homeless

City Council members will be looking at two proposals today keyed toward helping the homeless: approving plans for an indoor facility for homeless families and securing property that would allow an outside camping site. The outdoor proposal could include accepting property now owed by the Lawton Salvation Army, which closed a homeless camping site on its Southwest E Avenue complex in early March, but has allowed homeless to camp in tents on property located directly north of the complex.
