(WSAV) — To help parents avoid the back-to-school rush, county health departments in the Coastal Health District are hosting special summer vaccination and screening events for children entering school this fall. “Every August, we get frantic calls from parents who suddenly realize their children needvaccines or screenings, but appointments are booked up for weeks,” said Paige Lightsey,Immunization Program Manager for the Coastal Health District.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) — Your day at the beach could be anything but fun if you are stung by a jellyfish. On Hilton Head Island, thousands of visitors hit the beaches. Alec Kipnes with Shore Beach Services (SBS) say jellyfish season typically starts round late June and lasts about 8 weeks. “Jellyfish are kind of seasonal here. Usually we see an uptick around July, August. “But some are washing on shore now. Since March SBS has treated more than 90 stings.

The Women Veterans of the Coastal Empire met Saturday at the Mighty Eighty Musuem to connect each other to resources. It can be isolating to be a veteran. And when WSAV News 3’s Eden Hodges met with some local veterans, she was told being a woman in the military can be even moreso.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The class of 2025 is graduating into a job market that’s not quite the welcome mat it was a few years ago. Hiring projections have cooled significantly, dropping from 7.3 percent in the fall to just 0.6 percent in the spring. According to Fuller E Calloway Professor of Economics, Parker College of Business at Georgia Southern University, much of that slowdown has to do with the uncertainty at the national level.

(WSAV) – Leah Spann, 17, is graduating from Savannah Early College High School as a junior, and her bevy of accomplishments and natural abilities in the classroom have earned her a free ride to college. “I’ve always been told I’m pretty smart,” said Leah. Pretty smart to the tune of 24 college acceptance letters and $572,322 awarded in scholarship money. Leah knew she wanted to graduate early and receive a high-level college education as far back as middle school.

STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — The Statesboro Police Department will revive a program that’ll give teens a chance to see what it’s like to wear a badge. This July, Statesboro Police will have 15 to 20 fresh new faces join them on the force. “After a summer’s worth of adventures, I hope that kids can look back and say that was the funnest week that I had,” said Police Chief Mike Broadhead. The department is reviving their Teen Police Academy.

JASPER COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) – A mother and son have been arrested after “several hours of unsuccessful negotiation and non-compliance,” officials said Monday. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said they responded to the home in the River Hill area to serve an arrest warrant on Trent Warren.

STATESBORO, Ga. — A Statesboro nonprofit hit a major milestone Saturday morning, distributing its 3 millionth meal to those in need. Feed the Boro, which hosts monthly food giveaways, celebrated the occasion during its latest distribution event. “We started coming out because we were hungry,” said Roy Myrick, who received the milestone meal box. Myrick has been attending the events for several months and often shares his extra food with neighbors. “It was kind of a shock when they told me,” he said.
