    A new program in Wichita has created a more streamlined approach for students to receive their education degree and address teacher shortages. The Future Teacher Academy will enable Wichita school district graduates to work as paraeducators while completing their elementary education degree through WSU Tech and Wichita State University. “At some point, we need to feed ourselves,” Wichita school Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld said.

    Kids 17 years old and younger will be able to swim free on Saturdays at McAfee Pool this summer. Wichita City Council members approved using Hyatt funds for the program at its meeting Tuesday. It also allocated money to provide 430 scholarships for families living in the city so their kids can participate in the city youth football league. That scholarship will cover registration and uniform costs and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    Wichita School Board member Stan Reeser criticized several people who spoke out against the district’s Facility Master Plan at Monday’s meeting. During the public comment portion of the meeting, several people spoke in opposition to closing OK Elementary, which is part of the master plan, with one person suggesting that the plan was not tied to student academic achievement.
