CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake South boys basketball coach Matt LePage thought hard about calling a timeout with the score tied with Burlington Central Friday and his team handling the ball. LePage considered calling it with 1 minute remaining, after the Gators has used up 45 seconds. He thought about it again about 20 seconds later, but held off because he has a really talented guard and sensed he was about to do something special. “I was about 5 seconds from calling a timeout,” LePage said.

A Christmas tree lighting ceremony, visits with Santa and cookie decorating are just some of the activities on tap as part of Saturday’s A Merry Little Sandwich Christmas event. A Merry Little Sandwich Christmas will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Park, 151 E. Railroad St. in downtown Sandwich. A Merry Little Sandwich Christmas is being presented by the Sandwich Area Chamber of Commerce and Sandwich Park District. The event is a longstanding tradition in the community.

The McHenry Elementary Education Foundation will host a craft and vendor fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Parkland School, 1802 N. Ringwood Road in McHenry. The event will feature more than 60 craft and vendor displays. Parking and admission to the event are free. Musical entertainment will be provided by McHenry School District 15 students from McHenry Middle School, Parkland and the Riverwood Performing Arts Club. Raffle prizes and MJ’s Coffee Bar will be available.

The annual Plano High School madrigal performances are planned for 6 p.m. Dec. 2 and 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in the PHS auditorium. Come out and support 80 madrigal singers, actors and instrumentalists. DIXON – The Dixon City Council has approved a request from the city’s fire chief to increase the cost of an ambulance ride. The cost for an ambulance transport had been $1,000; it will increase to $1,500 per ride based on action taken by the council at its most recent regular meeting. Before the vote, Dixon Fire Chief Ryan Buskohl said the last increase was in the fall of 2019 and the hike is needed because of escalating operating costs.

Students in the Yorkville School District 115 can now see their calendar for next year, and middle school students will have some new course options in the coming year. Y115 school board members voted unanimously and without discussion to approve the 2024-2025 school year calendar and several new courses at their Nov. 27 meeting. Next school year will begin on Aug. 15, 2024, and end May 28, 2025.

Glen Ellyn police Thursday arrested a Downers Grove man on felony charges of sexual exploitation of a child under 13 and two charges of sexual exploitation of a child under 13 - expose self, authorities said. Matthew T. Morgan, 36, is currently being held at the DuPage County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 1.
