McHENRY – Huntley left fielder Haiden Janke had an inkling early on that it was going to be a productive day at the plate. “When we were warming up this morning I felt like my swing was there and I could have a good day,” Janke said. “I didn’t get too high on myself and felt smooth and calm and just went out and had fun.”Janke was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Red Raiders past McHenry 5-2 in their Fox Valley Conference baseball opener Friday on McHenry’s new field.

At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Huntley’s AJ Putty does not look like a typical leadoff hitter. Red Raiders coach Andy Jakubowski doesn’t care about that. He is sticking with a simple philosophy he utilized the three previous seasons with Ryan Bakes. “I want our top hitter to get as many plate appearances as he can throughout a season,” Jakubowski said. “AJ’s hit one or two (homers) this year.

McHenry pitcher Gavin Micklinghoff initially was headed to Waukesha, Wisc. to play with close friends and high school teammates Connor Rodgers and Eddie Synek at NCAA Division III Carroll University. The Warriors had just made school history by taking fourth in the Class 4A Baseball State Tournament. Micklinghoff could have had four more years together with Rodgers and Synek. But in the summer of 2022, Micklinghoff had second thoughts.

I never saw anyone who despised losing more than Steve McMichael. He would sit there after games, hair hanging to his shoulders, game pants still on, just staring at the floor. I really appreciated his genuine disdain for losing. Too many players just rolled with it. RIP Mongo.
