The number of pupil absences in North Yorkshire schools has almost doubled in the last two years. North Yorkshire Council held an event at Pavilions of Harrogate this month to tackle the issue. There were 10,076 suspensions representing a total of 19,600 days of lost learning in 2023/24. This compares with 5,058 suspensions in the academic year of 2021/22, representing 10,076 lost days. The number of permanent exclusions has also doubled, from 54 pupils in 2021/22 to 112 this year.

Henshaws Makaton Choir lit up Ripon Cathedral with its Carols by Candlelight concert. The concert on Friday (December 6) was held to raise funds and awareness for people living with sight loss and other disabilities. The choir from Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre at Knaresborough uses Makaton, a language programme that uses signs and symbols to help people communicate.

Police have launched an appeal after an 85-year-old man fell while protecting his dog from a 'Pit Bull-type dog' in Harrogate. According to a police statement today (December 10), the incident occured on Hall Lane Park, near Richard Taylor Church of England Primary School in the Bilton area on Tuesday, November 18 between 7pm and 7.30pm.

The two-floor site will be located above The Little Ale House on Cheltenham Crescent in the former Ali Raj restaurant. Over & Above is owned by Richard Hamer, 33, and is expected to open in March 2025. The space is undergoing extensive refurbishment from new walls and flooring to bespoke bars.

Over 80 decorated Christmas trees have gone on display at St John's Church for the 10th Great Knaresborough Christmas Tree Festival. The festival sees community groups, school and businesses decorate trees on whatever theme they choose. Opened by the Bishop of Ripon at a preview night on Friday (December 6), the event runs until December 22. Visitors are welcome from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays; 12 noon to 4pm on Sundays; and noon to 5pm on weekdays.

Rudding Park’s Peter Banks, who led the business for 28 years, won ‘Outstanding Contribution’ at the annual Hotel Cateys awards in London. Mr Banks led Rudding Park since it opened in 1997 and oversaw the business grow to 320 employees and a turnover of £28 million. He said:I am amazed, delighted and shocked! I am so happy that a Yorkshire business has won. When I left London in 1996 the general manager said to me – 'this’ll be the death of your career”' I thought marvellous.

The Saint Michael’s Hospice store on High Street will mark the occasion alongside longstanding volunteers Jean Boyes and Ruth Usher who have been part of the team since the shop first opened. Ms Boyes, who recently turned 92, has been volunteering with Saint Michael’s for 30 years.
