Leah Levinson is best known as a member of the black metal band Agriculture, but for longer than that band has even existed, she’s been releasing her own material under the name Cali Bellow. “I’ve been doing the project in various forms for over a decade. The oldest album I have online is from 2016, but the music on it dates all the way back to 2012,” she explained.

The rise of hyperpop, as confusingly vague of a genre label as it is, was dominated by a few major events. In its early days, PC Music compilations and SOPHIE’s PRODUCT laid the groundwork for the genre’s fundamentals. Then Charli XCX’s 2017 album Pop 2 featured future genre stars like Caroline Polachek, Kim Petras, and Dorian Electra. And a few years later, 100 gecs completely blew the doors open with their frenetic 2019 debut.

The biggest problem with SOPHIE does not exist at the album's core. In fact, the ideas and ambition contained at the record's outset are strong. Take "The Dome's Protection," a sprawling 7-minute spoken word epic with a masterfully captivating vocal performance courtesy of Nina Kraviz. And "Do You Wanna Be Alive" captures, for lack of a better word, a cuntiness that SOPHIE always seemed artistically enamored with.
