TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — St. Luke’s CARES (Children at Risk Evaluation Services) is working to ensure every child is safe, heard, and supported. St. Luke’s CARES is a community resource and a specialty clinic that assists when there is an allegation of child abuse. Silvia Renova-Gaxiola, St. Luke’s CARES Program Manager, told KMVT that if there is an allegation of abuse they provide forensic interviews, forensic medical evaluations, and family advocacy.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The Twin Falls School District is working to ensure students are reaching their literacy goals after a federally administered national assessment showed the national reading scores are at a 20-year low. Sheli Hulet is an instructional coach at Pillar Falls Elementary School for the school district and she told KMVT there are instructional coaches in every building in the school district. She said all nine instructional coaches have emphasized student literacy.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — “We have all the water we’re going to have and so we have to make better use of what we have and become more efficient,” said Dean Stevenson, member of the Water Resource Board. In 2022, the Twin Falls Canal Company applied for a Leading Idaho Aging Infrastructure Grant from the Idaho Water Resource Board (IWRB) to assist in lining 4,500 feet of the High Line Canal to reduce seepage losses.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The American Farmland Trust (AFT) has developed a new certification to help save farmland in the United States and here in Idaho. The U.S. Farmed certification was developed by the national nonprofit that helps keep farmers on their land and shows support for American farmers. The new certification will have a new U.S. Farmed packaging seal for farm products that derive at least 95 percent of their agricultural ingredients from U.S. farms.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — With 2024 being a big election year the Idaho legislature is making sure every Idahoan can cast their vote. Legislation to make free IDs for voting more accessible was passed this legislative session and was signed by Governor Brad Little and will take effect July 1, 2024. This eliminates a restriction for Idahoans who previously would not have been able to obtain a free ID if they had an Idaho driver’s license in the prior six months.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau Household Pulse Survey show about one in four people who have had COVID-19 will contract Long COVID. For those suffering with Long COVID, they can feel the effects for three months and even up to a year. Symptoms include fatigue, aches, brain fog, loss of sleep, and more.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Magic Valley Quilts of Valor will be presenting quilts to thirteen local Veterans next week as part of the Quilts of Valor Foundation. The foundation was started by the mother of a soldier who was stationed in Iraq in 2003. To date, the foundation has awarded over 377,000 quilts nationwide. The local Magic Valley chapter has been meeting to make quilts for veterans since 2005 to pay back our active military service members and veterans.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — March is National Kidney Month, a great reminder to check your kidneys and make sure you are healthy. Kidneys are a filer system for your body, and they remove waste products from the blood and produce urine. Doctor Heather McGuire with St. Luke’s told KMVT that as we age the body loses some of its ability to filter the blood. McGuire said diagnosing kidney disease can be difficult as there typically aren’t any symptoms until it’s in an advanced stage.
