A rarely united Allentown City Council passed a resolution Wednesday that declares the city a “safe haven” for transgender people seeking gender-affirming health care. The vote was a unanimous 6-0 — Allentown Vice President Cynthia Mota was absent but she had signed on as a sponsor of the bill — and Mayor Matt Tuerk also voiced his support.

A “predatory towing” law now is in effect in Allentown, cracking down on towing companies that remove cars parked on private property — a practice many car owners have said was being done without warning or with high fees to have their cars returned. Allentown City Council unanimously approved the law April 2, and it took effect this week after a 10-day grace period.

Bethlehem City Council on Tuesday approved a zoning change that will pave the way for a 70-unit apartment building off North New Street near the city’s historic center. The vote was 4-2, with council members Grace Crampsie Smith and Hillary Kwiatek voting against the zoning change, and members Rachel Leon, Bryan Callahan, Kiera Wilhelm and Colleen Laird voting in favor. Council president Michael Colon was absent.
