Magik Theatre, San Antonio’s professional children’s theater in the historic Hemisfair District, says ongoing city construction along South Alamo Street has significantly impacted ticket sales over the past two years, causing the organization to cut staff. As the South Alamo project continues well past its original completion date, the theater has struggled to maintain its operations, according to Mel Zarb-Cousin, Magik’s managing director.

As local officials rally for a new downtown arena for the San Antonio Spurs and a revamped entertainment district they say will boost the local economy, a long-forgotten plan that made the same promises on the city’s East Side more than two decades ago gathers dust. A finalized 2003 community plan surrounding the brand-new, 18,418-seat SBC Center, later the AT&T Center and now the Frost Bank Center, drew up a vision for $250 million in projects across 7.9 square miles of the city’s East Side.

The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) laid off 159 employees last week, according to a filing with the Texas Workforce Commission. This follows the 61 layoffs the nonprofit announced in February, bringing its total layoffs to more than 200 over the last two months. In a statement, RAICES said the layoffs are the result of the loss of federal funding for legal representation of unaccompanied children.
