Rossville Historical Community Association awards scholarships

On May 27, members of the Rossville Historical Community Association awarded scholarships to three local high school graduates. The honorees are: John Delgado who received a $500 scholarship, Gavin Orta who received a $500 scholarship and Destinee Rios White who received a $1,500 scholarship. On hand to present the awards were Alex Guzman, president of the Rossville Historical Community Association and members of the scholarship committee, Andrea Griffin and Margarita Hughes.
Verdi community to celebrate 170 years on Oct. 11

The Verdi community is preparing to celebrate a special milestone– the 170th anniversary of its founding. Event organizers are planning a celebration set for Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Verdi Community Center, at 2045 FM 1784. Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you are from Verdi, living there now, have family from there or are simply interested in Verdi history.
Top 10 graduates, staff honored at JISD meeting

The May 12 Jourdanton ISD board meeting opened with recognition of the Top 10 graduating seniors. Jourdanton High School Principal Justin Saunders announced the students, who were each presented with certificates. They are, in order of rank: Kianna Cruz, Hailey Sralik, John Delgado, Mia Willborn, Tyler Speck, Annie Netardus, Allison Correra, Josiah Reyna, Brianna Straube and Heidi Mendoza. Those unable to attend were either working or attending an FFA contest.

Poteet strawberry grower Donovan Garcia partnered with the brewery, located on Lamar Street in San Antonio, for this strawberry blonde ale. Donovan’s father, Dolores “Lole” Garcia Jr. serves as the inspiration for the tasty beverage.

The creative, informative projects were on display at St. Andrew Parish Hall. “Our Lady of Grace typically does the Science Fair once a year, when we’re learning about the scientific method,” said Ms. Sandra Lee. “The fourth and fifth grade will have done labs in the classroom first to walk them through each step of the scientific method.

The event held April 4 featured students ranging in age from 6 years old to those in high school. Atascosa Homeschoolers is not a co-op. They are a group of homeschooling families who enjoy learning, socializing and spending time together.
