City of Mansfield apologizes for confusion over tornado siren test

The tornado siren heard by Mansfield residents Wednesday afternoon was only a test of the system. "We did not think our sirens were to be included in this or we would have put an alert out," Mansfield Safety-Service Director Keith Porch said. "Sorry for the confusion."The city parks that have tornado sirens are Johns Park, John Todd Park, South Park and Burton Park. It was only a test. 17-year-old may be bound over for trial as adult for second time

MANSFIELD — A 17-year-old Mansfield teen is alleged to have been involved in the deaths of two people. The teen may be bound over for trial as an adult for the second time in three months on homicide-related charges. The alleged crimes occurred six months apart, according to court records.
Richland County Foundation grants over $8.7 million in 2024

During the Richland County Foundation's annual meeting May 9, president and CEO Allie Watson reported it granted $8.7 million in 2024. Donors were very generous, according to a news release. Donors were focused on community development, with grants totaling $2.6 million.

A hearing was held Tuesday morning in Richland County Juvenile Court for a 17-year-old boy who is a suspect in connection with the murder of Jason Antrican in 2023. Mansfield police detectives are investigating the shooting death of Jason Antrican, 42, of Mansfield, on Oct. 10, 2023 in the 800 block of Brookfield Drive.

The Mansfield Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 10:30 a.m. May 26 at the five-way intersection of Park Avenue West and Marion Avenue. The parade will continue east on Park Avenue to the gazebo in Central Park where a memorial service will be held after the parade. Memorial Day is a federal holiday to honor and mourn U.S. military personnel who died while serving. Observed on the last Monday of May, it is considered the unofficial beginning of summer.
RiCI opens jobs center to help inmates with post-release transition

Richland Correctional Institution Thursday morning celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its newly certified Ohio Means Jobs Center at the prison at 1001 Olivesburg Road. Eighteen of the state's 28 Ohio prisons currently operate an OMJ Center, funded by grant money. The Ohio Means Jobs Center at RiCI currently has four trained, incarcerated men who assist with making Ohio Means Jobs accounts, building resumes, conducting job searches and completing reentry assessments.

The Mansfield Memorial Museum's monthly meeting Wednesday night began with an informative presentation on the issue of the homeless downtown by Mayor Jodie Perry and others. A downtown business recently raised concerns about homeless people loitering and defecating around their building, alley and its parking lot at the rear of the Mansfield Memorial Museum. Ed Olson, the museum board's president, invited the mayor to talk about the issue after an exchange of emails.
Richland County Sheriff's Office reaccredited again

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office was awarded its national accreditation March 22 by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies in the Law Enforcement program. The agency was first accredited in 2017. Following a multi-year self-assessment phase and a meticulous site-based assessment of community engagement, policy, procedures, equipment and facilities by CALEA assessors, Sheriff J. New Walker Woods housing community celebrated; 64 new duplexes planned

A new housing development near the intersection of Home and Walker Lake roads was celebrated May 2 with the Richland Area Chamber & Economic Development. Called Walker Woods, Jerry Holden of the Holden Property Group said the development at 1596 Walker Woods Blvd. will expand to 64 duplexes or "twin homes." Currently, one duplex has been completed. The lots are 1.5 miles from the walking trail at Ohio State University-Mansfield. Holden said the homes were built by Wigton Homes/Powered by Holden.
