It's Good Friday and as usual there is confusion in Laois and Ireland over whether businesses are open or not. Laois County Council and all the libraries, banks and of course schools are all closed today. Many businesses choose to close too, including at least one Laois pub. What do you think? Should it be business as usual in this growingly non religious state, or should the Government bite the bullet and make it an official Bank Holiday with holiday pay if people have to work?

The Government has given Laois €30 million to fix roads this year but it has none for a "deficient" national road from Portlaoise to Mountmellick. The narrow stretch of the N80 road has no verges and traverses a moving bog. Transport Infrastructure Ireland has given its reasons for not funding the work. While it primarily says there is a "not sufficient funding", it also says it has no record of collisions for the area.
