A huge weekend festival is on the way to Laois next weekend, with the return of the Old Fort Quarter Festival in Portlaoise. The festival takes place all over Portlaoise town centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 27, 28, and 29. Concerts will take place nightly inside the cool new covered events venue in the Old Fort itself. The great line up includes Friday 27 June, 7pm, €40 The Whistlin' Donkeys & The Dooley Brothers.

The annual switcheroo between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to hold the Cathaoirleach's chair in Portlaoise Municipal District sparked a row at their June meeting. The two parties are in a pact to vote together as four votes against three, to keep the higher profile, paid position within their ranks. Fianna Fáil Cllr John Joe Fennelly has been voted to chair the central Laois district for the coming year, replacing Fine Gael Cllr Paddy Buggy.

A Laois charity shop has cut the ribbon on a new bridal and debs department, offering affordable and sustainable gowns to shoppers. Vincent's shop in Portlaoise has officially launched their new dedicated offering, and they are even throwing in a glass of alcohol free prosecco for their exclusive private shoppers. Manager Mary Ryan cut the ribbon on Thursday, June 19 at noon, with several customers already in the shop on the Dublin Road, waiting to check out the wedding dress selection upstairs.

Portlaoise should have a public state owned nursing home, a local councillor suggests, to give people a choice. The Laois town where the private Residence nursing home is at the centre of a controversy following an RTÉ Primetime investigation, needs a HSE owned facility says Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald. There are three HSE nursing homes in Laois; in Mountmellick, Abbeyleix and Shaen but none in Portlaoise where one in four Laois people live.
