    Kildare’s wait for a win in the McDonagh Cup goes on but they are unlikely to get much of a better opportunity for that first win than this after Kerry scored the last five points of the game to stage a real smash and grab victory at Cedral St Conleths Park. After going winless through the 2021 and 2023 campaigns in this competition, Kildare were lacklustre through the first half but were much improved after trailing 1-7 to 0-9 at half time.

    By Gráinne Ní Aodha, PAAn appeal has been issued over a possible live army round seen near a walking trail in Co Wicklow. A white Illumination round is about 12in long and weighs 3.1kg. It is used by the military to illuminate an area at night. Gardaí said the casing might still contain explosive and incendiary material, which would pose “significant danger” to the public.

    The vast majority of Kildare drivers who were disqualified from driving in 2024 have not surrendered their licence, according to figures released to Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly by the Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien. In 2024 a total of 418 Kildare drivers — including 74 with learner permits — were disqualified by a judge, but so far only 34 have surrendered their licenses to the Road Safety Authority, despite being given 14 days to do from the start of the disqualification.

    A secondary school in Kildare is waiting on temporary accommodation to come from another local school to be able to accommodate 30 children who are on its waiting list. However, local councillor Paula Mulroe is fearful that “additional bureaucracy and red tape” threatens the delivery of the temporary accommodation, and could prevent the children on the waiting list at St Farnan’s Seconadary School, Prosperous from getting a school place.

    Olivia KelleherFormer Bord Gáis Chief Executive John Mullins, who was a native of Cork city but lived in Castlemartyr, has died. Mr Mullins, who was in his mid fifties, was the executive chairman of Amarenco, a company which is focused on the development, financing and ownership of solar PV assets in Europe, Carribbean, Middle East and AsiaPac. He was CEO of Bord Gáis Energy (BGE) from December 2007 until the end of 2012.
