    The sunny spell over the past few weeks put me in mind of the summer of 1976, one of the hottest summers in living memory. On a number of days from late June until the middle of August, the temperature pushed the mercury above 32°C at locations right across the country. On 29 June, the temperature reached a scorching 32.5°C near Ferbane in Co Offaly. I have a clear memory of the time because I started my first job that summer, working for Paddy and Anne Lambe in their public house on Duke Street.

    A new bus route between Athy and Allenwood will start on 3 June, run by TFI Local Link Kildare South Dublin. This new route is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network. Route 888 will operate five daily return services Monday to Saturday and three daily return services on Sunday.

    PLANS to open a new road through Murtagh’s Cross in Naas have been confirmed, and “it is hoped to commence work on this project in the second half of 2025”. This was revealed at the recent meeting of the Naas Municipal District meeting following a question from cllr Bill Clear.
