    On Monday afternoon, four volunteers at the Hoover Library decided to use their personal time to make a difference in the lives of foster kids, six to 12 years old, who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Deanna Massey was cutting an egg carton into pieces with her niece and older sister. “I was never in foster care, but things got pretty close a couple times. So, you know, thankful that it didn't” Massey said.

    While the world waits for the announcement out of Vatican City. Catholic church members in Birmingham are praying for the direction and tough decision the conclave has to make. Bishop Steven Raica, of Cathedral of Saint Paul Church, tells members in his homily, "Not to elect the most popular successor of Peter, not to elect a celebrity, not to choose a suave politician, but to discern a shepherd.”Raica also reminds parishioners these set qualities are what's important when electing a new pope.

    This week middle school aged students at South Hampton K-8 School are preparing to fill up a vending machine in the Ensley community. "It's amazing. It's an amazing feeling. All of us really worked hard,” Jason Walton, a 7th grader, said. WVTM 13 was there to see the 6th and 7th graders working hard packaging sponsor-donated menstrual pads, tampons and baby diapers for people who can't afford them. “Yes, we should make this vending machine completely free. Free of charge for anybody,” Walton said.

    In a few months thousands of film industry elites will be in Birmingham for the 27th annual Sidewalk Film Festival. With that in mind, the executive director Chloe Cook is left to scramble up a new plan because the federal funding sidewalk was expecting is not coming anymore. "So [it's] a really competitive process. and just disappointed to find out that hard work that we thought, you know, paid off was now being taken away from us,” Cook said.

    For years, legislatures have tried to revamp the makeup of the Birmingham Water Works Board. Senate Bill 89, drafted 10 years ago, shows lawmakers have had time to beef up what they want to see in SB 330. Essentially, it’s all about power, who gets the most representation on the board. Here's how the appointed board will work if SB330 passes. Under the amended bill, there will now be eight regional board members instead of the five they wanted when the bill was originally drafted.
