April 1, 1938 – March 31, 2025Mary Hanley Black was born the only child of Mary Isabell Johnson and John Edward Hanley on April 1, 1938, in Moab. She died at home in her sleep on March 31, 2025, just one day shy of her 87th birthday. Mary’s mother died about a month after her birth and she was raised by her grandparents, Milton and Ruth Johnson, in a big mixed family of 17 children. She was treated as a younger sibling.

Moab local Nick Lee has been commercially fishing in Alaska’s Bristol Bay for decades. In 2016, with a team of filmmakers, he started working on a documentary about fishing in the bay. At first, he envisioned it as a consumer-education film, focused on where the fish we eat comes from and how it’s handled and processed. But while he and his team were filming, a plan for a copper mine near the bay, that they thought had been defeated, was resurrected.

April 5, 1944 – March 22, 2025Dorothy Jean Stocks-Gough, nearly 81, passed away suddenly on March 22, 2025. A lifelong resident of Moab, Dorothy dedicated much of her life to serving her community as the Grand County Assessor. However, her greatest passion was always her family. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dorothy served faithfully in many capacities including as a teacher, in the nursery, the library, and as a member of the Relief Society.

John William “Johnny” Patterson passed away after an extended battle with cancer at age 65 on March 4, 2025, in Grand Junction, Colorado. Johnny was born on November 27, 1959, as the third of 7 children born to Tom and Marianne Patterson in Moab, where he grew up and attended school. Johnny worked on drill rigs for a while after high school and then moved to Nevada, where he started operating heavy equipment. He was very good at running all the equipment, but his favorite was the trackhoe.

The luxury train company Rocky Mountaineer is venturing further into Utah with an extended version of its ‘Rockies to the Red Rocks’ route. The route, which launched in 2021, brings travelers from Denver over the Rocky Mountains to Moab on a specialty train complete with lounge cars and deluxe amenities. Next April, travelers will be able to extend their trip to three days, traveling to Salt Lake City after a night’s stay in Moab.

Authorities confirmed that a body buried under the name “John Doe” is actually that of Robby Lynn Peay, a 17-year-old from Provo who disappeared in 1982. Peay ran away from a youth treatment center on Oct. 7, 1982. For decades, Peay’s adoptive family mourned his disappearance, even placing a memorial headstone in Provo, though his remains were never found—until now. Just four months after Peay ran away, a boy was found murdered in the Three Gossips area of Arches National Park.

The Bureau of Land Management Vernal Field Office is inviting public comments on the proposed renewal of commercial Special Recreation Permits for the B and C sections of the Green River. Thirteen commercial outfitters currently operate under these permits, offering guided river trips, hiking, camping, and fishing excursions. As these permits expire over the coming years, existing operators may apply for renewals to continue providing these services.

The voluntary restriction covers all climbing areas within the canyon, including Maverick Buttress and Reptilian Wall. Spring is a critical period for pregnant ewes and newborn lambs. Human disturbances can force these animals to abandon their preferred habitat, potentially affecting lamb survival rates.

Much of Moab is without power, part of a string of outages from Green River to Mexican Hat beginning around 6:30 p.m. that are affecting almost 10,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers. Power could remain out until tomorrow morning, according to the utility. While officials said that the cause is yet unknown, the Moab area saw wind gusts of up to 35 mph today. The Rocky Mountain power outage page updates every 15 minutes with any new information.
