April 1, 1938 – March 31, 2025Mary Hanley Black was born the only child of Mary Isabell Johnson and John Edward Hanley on April 1, 1938, in Moab. She died at home in her sleep on March 31, 2025, just one day shy of her 87th birthday. Mary’s mother died about a month after her birth and she was raised by her grandparents, Milton and Ruth Johnson, in a big mixed family of 17 children. She was treated as a younger sibling.

Moab local Nick Lee has been commercially fishing in Alaska’s Bristol Bay for decades. In 2016, with a team of filmmakers, he started working on a documentary about fishing in the bay. At first, he envisioned it as a consumer-education film, focused on where the fish we eat comes from and how it’s handled and processed. But while he and his team were filming, a plan for a copper mine near the bay, that they thought had been defeated, was resurrected.

April 5, 1944 – March 22, 2025Dorothy Jean Stocks-Gough, nearly 81, passed away suddenly on March 22, 2025. A lifelong resident of Moab, Dorothy dedicated much of her life to serving her community as the Grand County Assessor. However, her greatest passion was always her family. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dorothy served faithfully in many capacities including as a teacher, in the nursery, the library, and as a member of the Relief Society.

John William “Johnny” Patterson passed away after an extended battle with cancer at age 65 on March 4, 2025, in Grand Junction, Colorado. Johnny was born on November 27, 1959, as the third of 7 children born to Tom and Marianne Patterson in Moab, where he grew up and attended school. Johnny worked on drill rigs for a while after high school and then moved to Nevada, where he started operating heavy equipment. He was very good at running all the equipment, but his favorite was the trackhoe.
