Less than a year after structural concerns necessitated its removal, a belfry once again sits on the bell tower at of Lincoln Academy. A replica of the original, the new and upgraded belfry was lifted into place on Sept. 7, days after the school’s refurbished 1854 Hooper bell made its heralded return Sept. 4, thanks to a lift from B&B Tree Service, of Nobleboro. “To see that bell back up there … it’s a really neat moment,” said LA Head of School Jeff Burroughs.

The Central Lincoln County YMCA Board of Directors announced it is no longer pursuing the construction of an aquatic center, bringing to a close decades of intermittent efforts to bring a pool to the Damariscotta facility. “The reality is that there is no viable financial path to complete this project,” Liz Lufkin, CLC YMCA board chair, said in a press release, which can be found on page (X) of this edition.

Close to a month after the original removal date, the Lincoln Academy belfry and bell were removed from the school by a crane the morning of Friday, Oct. 6, bringing administrators an unexpected revelation about a piece of the school’s history. The belfry and bell removal completes the first of a three-phase project to address structural concerns and restore the bell tower, one of the most recognizable icons of the LA campus for over 150 years.
LA Begins Reaccreditation Process

Lincoln Academy has started the process to retain its New England Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation, something the Newcastle town academy must complete every 10 years in order to receive state and local funding. Head of School Jeff Burroughs discussed the process during a town hall meeting that coincided with the school’s academic open house on Wednesday, Sept. 20. “This is a pretty powerful … important process in the life of the school to define who we are,” Burroughs said.
