Dozens of light poles were stripped of their copper wiring in St. Paul’s St. Anthony Park neighborhood, though there have been fewer reports of such thefts in the city this year. The darkening of city and park streetlights and traffic signals due to theft has been an ongoing problem, with St. Paul spending about $3 million last year in repairs and staff time. The costs were around $1.2 million in 2023. By comparison, the total cost in 2019 was about $250,000, according to the city.

A man with a history of gun convictions was charged Friday with attempted murder, accused of opening fire in Maplewood while two juveniles cowered in fear nearby. Officers responded to an apartment building parking lot at Larpenteur Avenue and McMenemy Street about 5:55 p.m. on April 16. A child had just exited a bus and was waiting to be buzzed into an apartment building when the shooting happened. Surveillance video showed a Chevrolet Malibu entered the lot and drove past a gold vehicle.

Police said Thursday they’re looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck two pedestrians in Falcon Heights. The pedestrians sustained “non-life threatening, but severe injuries and were transported to a hospital for emergency care,” according to a statement from St. Anthony Police, which provides police services in Falcon Heights. The crash happened in the 1800 block of Snelling Avenue at 10:52 p.m. on Wednesday.

Four current and retired St. Paul firefighters pinned badges Thursday on their sons who are newly-minted firefighters — and Frank Todd did the honors twice. Both his sons joined him in the ranks of the St. Paul Fire Department as they graduated from the department’s academy. Todd, a St. Paul firefighter for 27 years, said he was feeling as proud as his wedding day and the days his two children were born.

Police have identified a man killed in a shooting on St. Paul’s West Side as a 20-year-old. James Q. Baker, of St. Paul, died at Regions Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, soon after he was shot in an apartment complex in the 600 block of Stryker Avenue. No one was under arrest as of Thursday afternoon. Police said Wednesday they are investigating what led to the shooting. Baker was the first person since November to be killed in a shooting homicide in St. Paul.
