As part of an effort to keep tobacco out of reach for anyone under age 21, North Bergen has passed a law requiring tobacco retailers in the township to be licensed every year by the township’s health department. Scheduled to take effect in the new year, the requirement will empower the health department to monitor and regulate all tobacco sales in the community, the township announced in a news release.

Three New Jersey Devils and the team mascot brought holiday cheer to RWJBarnabas’ Jersey City Medical Center yesterday, visiting patients, signing autographs, posing for photos and even getting to hold a day-old baby. As part of a full day of visits by Devils players, alums and staff to RWJBarnabas facilities around the state, team captain Nico Hischier, forward Timo Meier and goalie Jacob Markstrom were at the Downtown Jersey City hospital.

Scott Ring, who served as publisher of The Jersey Journal from 1994 to 2005, has died. He was 78. A Chicago native who had been living in Florida since his retirement from the newspaper, Ring died at Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, Florida, on Oct. 16, according to his obituary. Ring came to the Journal as its advertising director in 1989, having previously been the Chicago Sun-Times’s vice president of advertising.

Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church in Hoboken will celebrate its seventh annual Pride Mass at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 23. This year’s theme is “The Grace of Blessed Lives,” which OLG said in a news release mines the words and actions of Pope Francis as he shepherds LGBTQ Catholics throughout the world. The Rev. Alexander M. Santora, pastor, will preach on the significance of an exhortation by Pope Francis entitled “Fiducia Supplicans,” which welcomes blessings for LGBTQ individuals and couples.

Activist and author Kevin Powell will return to his hometown of Jersey City on Friday, June 21, for a free Juneteenth event co-hosted by the Jersey City Theater Center at White Eagle Hall. The event is intended to not only commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans but to also honor their enduring legacy through art, music, and community engagement.
