As previously signalled (refer to RMA reforms continue at pace), the Government has introduced the Resource Management (Freshwater and Other Matters) Amendment Bill to provide some 'quick win' reforms to the Resource Management Act (RMA). The intention is to help deliver its wider policy outcomes on reducing regulation on the primary sector, to in turn improve the primary sector's profitability and boost export earnings.

With the submission period for the Fast-track Approvals Bill only just having closed, and fresh from announcing the Government’s intention to extend port coastal permits for a further 20 years (joining aquaculture), the Government has now provided its intentions for its anticipated May 2024 round of RMA reforms - Urgent changes to system through first RMA Amendment Bill.

Jaden Walden, 18, had pleaded guilty in Washington County Court in March that he caused the death of Rycky Stark Jr. on Aug. 16. Walden was with a group of teens, when he pointed the shotgun in Stark’s direction, not realizing the gun was loaded. The gun fired and struck Stark in the abdomen, killing him, police said. The shooting was not intentional, investigators said.

The Government introduced the Fast-Track Approvals Bill to Parliament on Thursday 7 March 2024. As outlined in our recent Fast-Track Approvals Bill article, submissions to the select committee close on 19 April 2024. The Bill includes three pathways for projects to access the Fast-Track process, either by being listed in Schedule 2, or by a referral application and Ministerial approval similar to the current Fast-Track referral processes.
