Michigan State is losing another returning EDGE player to the portal. James Schott, a redshirt junior rush end, announced Wednesday via social media he’s transferring out to use his final two seasons of eligibility. He’s the second at the position to hit the portal during the spring window after Anthony Jones did last week. Schott, 6-foot-4 and 243 pounds, had five tackles in 19 games over the last two seasons. The former three-star recruit from Indiana didn’t play as a true freshman in 2022.

Michigan State reloaded its group of wide receivers in the offseason through the portal. Austin Clay and Jaylan Brown are among the returners but looking elsewhere as the redshirt freshmen entered the portal on Tuesday. A program spokesman confirmed Clay’s portal entry while Brown made the announcement on social media. Neither Clay nor Brown played as true freshmen last season. The Spartans wrapped up spring practice on Saturday. The spring portal window opened last week and closes on Friday.

Dillon Tatum is healthy again and looking for a new school. The Michigan State redshirt junior defensive back entered his name in the portal on Monday, he announced on social media. He is a graduate transfer with two seasons of eligibility remaining. Tatum has 62 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, in 22 career games with nine starts at cornerback but has also played safety and nickelback.

Gehrig Normand is leaving the Big Ten for the West Coast Conference. The Michigan State redshirt freshman guard announced his transfer commitment to Santa Clara via social media on Saturday night. He entered the portal on April 1, two days after the Spartans lost in the Elite Eight. Normand, 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, is a former four-star recruit from Texas who didn’t play while taking a redshirt as a true freshman.

Tom Izzo is adding a veteran guard to fill out the Michigan State backcourt following offseason attrition. Trey Fort, a well-traveled senior from Samford, committed to the Spartans on Friday, he announced on social media, following a visit to campus this week. He is the second transfer pickup for the Spartans in the last week, following Florida Atlantic sophomore forward Kaleb Glenn. Counting a pair of junior colleges, Michigan State will be Fort’s sixth school in as many years.

The Michigan State gymnastics team’s deepest postseason run in nearly four decades came to an end late Thursday night. Making their first team appearance in the NCAA Championships since 1988, the Spartans finished fourth in a four-team semifinal at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, and didn’t advance to Saturday’s final. “I’m kind of speechless of the showing that we had today,” coach Mike Rowe told reporters.

Before working out for NFL scouts, the offensive lineman watched film with former teammates and was struck by a leap in execution. “The meeting was crisper than, shoot, Week 12 last year,” Miller said. That was before the Spartans even opened spring practice under second-year coach Jonathan Smith, who Miller previously played for at Oregon State.
