WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the weather continues to warm up, more and more people are hitting the links to improve their golf game. While there are numerous courses around the region, one is older than all the rest. The Cape Fear Country Club was founded in 1896, making it not just the earliest golf course in the region but also the oldest private country club in North Carolina.

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — We’re approaching 95 years since a very important hospital popped up in a then-rural area of the Cape Fear. In the early 1900s, Brunswick County was served by just two physicians who provided care for the 15,000 people of the county – Dr. William Goley of Shallotte and Dr. James Arthur Dosher of Southport. They each often traveled up to 200 miles a week by horse and buggy to treat patients.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One of the most visited and widely known garden spaces in the Cape Fear is Airlie Gardens. But there’s another very popular one less than a mile down the road. The New Hanover County Arboretum on Oleander Drive is visited by an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 people per year, with the free gardens open year-round, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. each day.

WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — There are an endless number of historic houses in the cape fear which attract thousands of visitors each year. But one tucked away off a rural road in Brunswick County was so overlooked for years it was gradually falling into disrepair. That is until Sarah Harris and her husband stumbled upon the property and decided to restore it back to its glory days. “The first time that we saw it in person it felt like home. And we where we needed to be,” Harris said.

Here's a look at our current heat index. Think that's bad? It gets worse next week. https://t.co/rrOAbQJxhl

Our cold front washed out yesterday evening, leading to a lower rain coverage today despite the continued inflow of moisture. Bermuda High pressure inches closer to the SE coast tomorrow, giving rise to even more moisture and better coverage of showers/storms to end the week. https://t.co/rSnWzdsteo

Lightning can strike 5-10 miles from the main storm. There's still a lot of people on North Topsail Beach, despite a slowly approaching storm. Hopefully people take shelter if it drifts any closer. The ocean isn't a place you want to be ahead of a storm. https://t.co/q45dRsF2vK
