PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — It’s been nearly a century since Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany were brought overseas to live in an agricultural colony in rural Pender County. But the impacts of those years can still be seen today. The colony was originally founded in 1905 when Hugh MacRae began recruiting immigrants to the area for resettlement in six agricultural colonies. He aimed to recreate the close-knit communities found in Europe.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington has been visited by numerous presidents over the years. But only one has called the city home – at least for a brief time. Thomas Woodrow Wilson – he would later drop his first name – spent several years living in Wilmington during the second half of the 19th century. Wilson arrived in 1874 with his family at 17 years old, moving into 401 South Front Street.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This is the 100th installment of my History with ‘Hud’ series, which started back in April of 2023 to highlight local history from around the Cape Fear. BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Burgaw is widely known for its annual Blueberry Festival, which has taken place since 2004 and attracted thousands of visitors to the town. At the center of it all stands the Pender County Courthouse, which has quite the past of its own. Pender County itself was formed in 1875, with Watha its original county seat. But that was changed to Burgaw in 1877 with a courthouse coming not long after.
