WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hurricane Season kicks off on Sunday, marking the start of a 182-day stretch of prime hurricane formation conditions from June 1 through November 30. While the Cape Fear has been hit by countless memorable storms over the years, only a select few have been deemed worthy of being retired forever.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — One of the most visited and widely known garden spaces in the Cape Fear is Airlie Gardens. But there’s another very popular one less than a mile down the road. The New Hanover County Arboretum on Oleander Drive is visited by an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 people per year, with the free gardens open year-round, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. each day.

WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — There are an endless number of historic houses in the cape fear which attract thousands of visitors each year. But the impacts of those years can still be seen today. The colony was originally founded in 1905 when Hugh MacRae began recruiting immigrants to the area for resettlement in six agricultural colonies. He aimed to recreate the close-knit communities found in Europe.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington has been visited by numerous presidents over the years. But only one has called the city home – at least for a brief time. Thomas Woodrow Wilson – he would later drop his first name – spent several years living in Wilmington during the second half of the 19th century. Wilson arrived in 1874 with his family at 17 years old, moving into 401 South Front Street.
