In two school districts that tried — and failed — to pierce their tax caps last month, residents will vote today on whether to approve smaller budgets that scale back spending on summer school, preschool and other services. The Elwood school district is asking again for permission to exceed its tax cap, so its budget requires the approval of a 60% supermajority of voters. The Shelter Island district brought its budget under the cap, so it needs a simple majority.

Two school districts that unsuccessfully tried to pierce their tax caps last month will present scaled-down spending plans to voters that call for cuts to preschool education, summer school and funding for academic intervention. Voters in both districts will go to the polls on June 17. In Elwood, voters will decide on a $78,566,259 spending plan for the 2025-26 school year. The budget includes a 2.64% increase in the school property tax levy, the district said.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and law enforcement officials from 15 other states sued the Trump administration Wednesday, seeking to block millions of dollars in cuts to National Science Foundation programs. The cuts imposed on research and diversity programs “will devastate critical STEM research at higher education institutions,” the state attorneys general said in the 38-page lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan.
