It's the weekend and therefore time for a look at the cases that have recently come before Cornwall's magistrates. Everyone who has been charged with an offence, from the least to the most serious, appears initially before the magistrates. The most serious cases are then sent to the crown court. If a defendant pleads guilty, they could be sentenced straight away or have the matter put back for a pre-sentence report. If they deny the allegations against them, the case will be adjourned for a trial.

The team behind Reggie’s Street Food have opened the doors to their new restaurant in St Merryn, near Padstow. After months of planning and work, chef patron Reggie and his wife, Nisha, welcomed customers to their restaurant for the first time on Wednesday night (April 16).

A disabled man has said he was “absolutely floored” and “deeply hurt” after he was unfairly dismissed from a disability support charity. William Drysdale-Wood worked for Shared Lives South West for eight years before he was dismissed on grounds of ill health in September 2023. Mr Drysdale-Wood recently took on the charity at an Employment Tribunal and won, with a judge ruling his complaint of unfair dismissal was well founded.

A woman hit an elderly car park assistant over the head with a lump hammer after he told her she couldn’t camp next to a car park in Cornwall. Michelle Wyeth, 41, swung the hammer at the man while his back was turned to her. Wyeth, of Binhamy Close, Bude, appeared for sentencing at Truro Crown Court on Friday (April 11) after pleading guilty to one count of unlawful wounding.

A number of Angus cross bullocks have been stolen by cattle rustlers from a farm near the border of Devon and Somerset. Police are urging farmers to be vigilant of suspicious activity after the livestock theft. Devon and Cornwall Police said it received reports of five bullocks being stolen from a farm in the Bampton area, near Tiverton, in Devon. The incident is said to have taken place between 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 9, and Thursday, April 10.
