According to the Sarasota Police Department, the crash occurred near the North Washington Boulevard and 7th Street intersection on Feb. 10. Nichole Schmidt, the mother of Gabby Petito, filed the lawsuit in a Utah district court in November 2022, saying police failed to protect her daughter who was murdered by her fiancé weeks after an encounter with law enforcement.
