Twenty-one students are advancing to the international level based on their performance at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. This year’s fair included 455 participants from 67 schools in 16 categories ranging from animal sciences to translational medical science. The first round saw students present their work to judges with at least 25% of submissions in each category selected for the second round last month at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, according to fair officials.

A Port Jefferson teen is working to introduce science, technology, engineering and math concepts — collectively the fields known as STEM — to children in his community. Kieran Casey, a junior at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, has been creating STEM kits featuring physics-based activities such as adjustable catapults and rubber band-powered cars through Project Engineer Outreach, an initiative he launched last year.

Four Long Island teams are advancing to the national level after winning top awards at the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition Long Island Regional. The 2025 competition included 49 high school teams that designed and built robots using a kit of parts ranging from control systems to game components.

A referee who collapsed on the court during a championship high school basketball game last month was saved thanks to rescue efforts led by his longtime friend, Massapequa resident Jennifer Keane. Keane, the assistant boys basketball coordinator for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Section VIII, was sitting at the scorer’s table as Floral Park and West Hempstead high schools battled for the Nassau County Class A title at Farmingdale State College on March 8.

More than 200 teens throughout Long Island have been recognized as their school’s top physical education students. In Nassau County, 109 students were selected to receive the 2024-25 Outstanding Physical Education Student Award from the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s Nassau Zone. In Suffolk County, 104 students were selected to receive the 2025 High School Health & Physical Education Leadership Award from the association’s Suffolk Zone.
